Clean Market was built at the intersection of two things: a decade of platform development and a couple of years spent studying the sustainability problem properly.
The founder, Tim Bryant, spent the previous chapter of his career building and licensing a CMS platform to exhibition and conference organisers - a sector that, when Covid closed it down, he chose not to follow into virtual events. Instead, he studied Business Sustainability Management at Cambridge, and came back with a clear diagnosis.
The problem was not a lack of information. It was a lack of structure. Sustainability data was fragmented across dozens of commercial silos - frameworks, certifications, disclosure platforms, advisory firms - none interoperable, many with commercial interests in keeping it that way. Procurement teams spent significant time manually cross-referencing sources that were incomplete by design. Businesses trying to act responsibly were drowning in noise: career-building opinion, snake oil claims, and ambiguity where clarity should be.
Clean Market exists to reduce that friction. Not by adding another opinion to the pile, but by building the independent, structured layer that sits at the point where businesses actually make decisions - who to work with, who to source from, who to trust.
And it does so in a way that helps everyone: human search and human content. The people using Clean Market are actively searching - not being served sponsored results or AI-generated summaries. The profiles are built and evidenced by the organisations themselves. No paid placement. No algorithm deciding what surfaces. As AI-generated content floods the web and search results become harder to trust, a structured human-verified dataset becomes more valuable, not less.
The platform is built on proprietary .NET software developed by a local long-standing development team with twenty years of shared history. It is fast, low-carbon, SEO-efficient, and built to scale. The homepage generates approximately 0.03g CO₂ per page view - among the lowest of any website tested globally. That is not a coincidence. A sustainability platform should practice what it advocates.
The Clean Market logo reflects what is at stake. A circle - the whole - with an egg timer shape cut through it. Seventy percent ocean, thirty percent land. Time running out, but also a bottleneck: the narrow point where information should flow freely and doesn't. Clean Market is built to open that bottleneck.
Clean Market Group Limited is the commercial platform. Something significant and not-for-profit is being built alongside Clean Market that will change the nature of the platform and the value of being in it. We are not ready to say more yet.
