Our verification approach
Clean Market exists to help businesses find more credible, responsible organisations faster.
We focus on evidence-checked progress, not perfection.
We are not a certification body.
We do not score or rank companies.
We provide a practical verification layer to support trust and discoverability.
What we verify
Companies requesting a listing answer a standard set of impact questions and upload supporting evidence.
Clean Market reviews this evidence to check it reasonably supports the claims made.
Verification currently focuses on five core areas:
Carbon & emissions
Measurement, targets, and actions relating to greenhouse gas emissions (at minimum Scope 1 & 2, with Scope 3 encouraged).
Water
Monitoring, management, and actions to reduce consumption or prevent pollution.
Products & materials
Material choices and application of circular principles such as recyclability, reusability, repairability, or recycled content.
Waste
Waste minimisation, segregation, and responsible treatment or disposal.
Nature
Consideration of nature impacts or actions to protect or restore ecosystems.
Companies must demonstrate credible progress in carbon and at least one additional area to be considered for inclusion.
What counts as evidence
Evidence may include, for example:
- Emissions inventories or footprint summaries
- Public sustainability or ESG webpages
- Board-approved targets or policies
- Internal monitoring data
- Certifications, standards, or third-party assurance
- Project documentation or partner confirmations
External certifications and frameworks are accepted as supporting evidence, but they are not required.
What verification means on Clean Market
When a company is shown as verified:
- They have submitted evidence
- Clean Market has reviewed it
- The evidence reasonably supports the claims made
Verification does not mean:
- Perfect performance
- Best-in-class
- Certified by Clean Market
It means the company can show something tangible behind its responsible business claims.
Why this approach
Sustainability data is fragmented.
Claims are easy to make and hard to compare.
Buyers need faster ways to identify more credible suppliers.
Clean Market’s role is to introduce a consistent, evidence-checked discovery layer that improves trust without creating heavy compliance barriers.
Continuous improvement
Verification criteria will evolve over time as standards mature and data availability improves.
Our direction of travel is always the same:
More clarity.
More evidence.
More useful signals for buyers.
